A God That Redeems

I love getting coupons from my favorite stores, and what I like most about getting them is that once I redeem them, they reduce the price that I have to pay for goods. Now, I am certain the Psalmist did not have coupons in mind when he wrote, “He redeems me from death;” nevertheless, his words got me thinking about coupons, and I will tell you why in a moment.

Redeem, in this context means to free from the consequences of sin, and this is exactly what Jesus did for us. He gave his life to redeem us from the consequence of sin, which is death. Romans 6:23 explains, “For the wages of sin is death…”

Without question, death is a hefty price to pay for sin. So no wonder, I thought about coupons, but thanks be to God, Jesus’s death has far more power than any coupon. For whereas a coupon only lessens the amount we have to pay for goods, Jesus’ death paid the full price that sin demanded. First Peter 1:18-19 explains it well, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold…But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”

Because we have been redeemed, the gift of eternal life is available to all, and this gift is proof that Jesus is a redeemer.
